The deployment of the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz from Valparaíso, Chile, into Argentina’s Exclusive Economic Zone (under President Milei) for joint exercises in the “Southern Seas” from 26 to 30 April has caused serious concern in Britain.
London views the move as indirect support for Argentina’s long-standing national goal of seizing the Falkland Islands and as retaliatory pressure for the UK’s abstention on Iran-related issues.US-UK relations are currently strained.
This stems not only from American pressure on the City of London’s financial services sector, but also from the Trump administration’s strategic pivot toward the technology-industrial complex, AI, Silicon Valley, and allied sectors.
There is also a broader American disengagement from the "Commonwealth", with Washington now focusing on consolidating “Greater North America”: from the historic American Independence, expanding from the Mississippi River across the Pacific to the most ... recent plan for a northward "advence" toward Canada and Greenland.
British officials are particularly worried by Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s positions on Iran, Europe, and Ukraine, which openly challenge Trump’s policies and the qonsequences to be paid.
UK intelligence and diplomatic services fear that further retaliatory “events” could follow, directly affecting British interests in multiple regions of the world.
Argentine President Javier #Milei — a close ally of both Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu — has revived the issue of the “illegality” of #British occupation of the Falklands.
For the British, the Falklands remain the last potent symbol of UK global power.
Any crisis over the islands would trigger explosive public reactions in Britain.
Chile, from whose waters the Nimitz sailed, has publicly declared its solidarity with Argentina on the Falklands question.
A few weeks ago, when British bases in Cyprus faced threats from unidentified missile and drone attacks, the Greek government took the lead in deploying air and naval forces to protect the island.
It is worth noting that the British Sovereign Base Areas constitute approximately 10% of Cypriot territory and are home to around 15,000 Cypriot citizens.
Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides has also directly raised the issue of renegotiating the outdated arrangement of the “sovereign” British bases.
These developments come at a time when Cyprus, having delivered an exceptionally successful and influential EU Council Presidency — far exceeding expectations — finds itself enjoying perhaps the strongest diplomatic position and reach in its history.
Similar pressures may soon be directed at Britain’s closest Commonwealth relatives — Australia and New Zealand — and at other parts of the British Commonwealth.
Collectively, these actions place significant strain on Britain’s post-#Brexit “Global Britain” strategy.
They raise existential questions about Britain’s ability to sustain an ambitious global role without the full backing of its special relationship with the United States.
A weakened UK would struggle to support such a strategy on its own.
Any choice facing Great Britain will carry enormous costs: either continued strategic confrontation with the United States, or a deeply painful compromise.
President Trump does not appear willing to leave much room for British manoeuvre.
